MAB ZONES
MAB MERMERSHIP

Dear Member,

1. OUR LAST FUNCTION - A REVIEW

(a) Managing Committee, MAB had organized its Annual get-together (a day function) on Sunday, 23rd January, 2005 at Naval Baug, Marve, Malad (W) on its vast, shaded ground, with the sea right at the back. Though some took it more as a picnic, the function was held during daytime for a change and on experimental basis to seek popular opinion / reaction whether an evening function (our practice so far) or a day function would be preferred by the members at large. We would like to have member’s views on this subject to enable us to decide whether we have our next Annual function (to be held in January, 2006) as a Day or an Evening one.

(b) Our aforesaid last function was attended by 232 guests, including quite a few newcomers. It started at 11 a.m., with a hearty breakfast of Halwa-Mathri, Sandwitches and Ragda-pattice, washed down with cups of hot tea. Then started the Milna-Julna session with glasses (!!) in hands and delicious veg / non-veg snacks straight off the grill on sale. After rounds of some outdoor games and a sea-visit by some, a sumptuous Veg. Lunch was spread out at around 3 p.m. During all this while, the highlight of the day was a lively, freelance, extempore “songs session” in which ladies and gentlemen, young and old, opened their hearts out by rendering popular songs to the delight of the audience. We all know about the tremendous musical talent available in our local Biradri and look forward to availing of the same in our next functions. The day finally ended around 5 pm., with evening tea and garma-garam bhajias.

(c) While most members came by public or personal transport, members from our East Zone (Chembur-New Mumbai) had hired a bus for a comfortable to and fro ride, as they had done a number of times in the past. Members in other Zones too could perhaps think of similar transport arrangements for the convenience of their members, which could also result in some larger attendance in our next functions.

(d) Our special thanks to the following for their voluntary services and helpful participation in the function:

i) Shri Chetan Mathur (Jogeshwari) and Shri Anil K. Mathur (Mira Road) for compeering the stage items and organizing outdoor activities.

ii) Shri Gyanesh Mathur (Vashi) and Shri Ashok Mathur (Mulund) for help on the Registration Counter.

iii) Shri Diwakar Mathur and Shri Mohit C. Mathur, (both from Koperkhairane) for managing the bar right through.

(iv) Shri Harvansh N. Mathur (Andheri-W) for general arrangements.

(v) Mrs. Manjari M. Mathur (Koperkhairane) and her team for managing the coupons sale counter.

And to all other young men and ladies for extending a helping hand on various jobs on the spot.

(e) Sponsorships & Donations:

We gratefully acknowledge receipt of the following sponsorship / donations during the function:

2. MAB WELFARE TRUST:

Managing Committee takes great pleasure in announcing that with generous contributions, totaling to Rs. 1,47,250 from members (list of contributors enclosed at Annexure-A) MAB has established a Trust, “MAB WELFARE TRUST” in May, 2005 which is a Registered body under the Charitable Public Trusts Act at Mumbai. Necessary permission for issue of Certificates under Section 80G of the I.Tax Act has been applied for, and on its receipt we will be able to accept contributions /donations which will give Tax relief to the Donors under the Income Tax Act. Contributors listed in the Annexure may kindly take this as our acknowledgement for having received the amounts donated by each, pending issue of formal, individual receipts to them after completion of the Trust formation formalities.

The main aim of the Trust is to provide medical relief to our members in distress. Other ideas like buying land and building a Hall etc., though very much viable and often talked about, are still in their infancy and require great efforts of members and other well wishers to materialize. However, the way has now been cleared to launch any such or other meaningful activities. Members are requested to please use their resources and make all efforts to get as many donations as possible for the Trust to bring its Corpus to a viable level.

3. THE ASSOCIATION:

a) Our Zones:

As members are aware, we have divided Mumbai and suburbs in seven geographical Zones for better coordination and administrative convenience. The main idea of formation of the Zones has been to make available ready made opportunity for better contact (Mulaqaat, aana-jana, khana peena) between Mathur families residing nearby in the Zone. Developing the Zones and promoting bhai-chaara amongst its members is one of the main and most important objective and agenda of the Managing Committee. If we all strive to achieve this, most other benefits like member’s increased participation in our activities, generating funds etc., would naturally and automatically follow in due course. It would be to our great pleasure and satisfaction if members are benefited by this Zonal system and are of help to each other at time of need.

Each Zone has one or two Managing Committee members as Incharge of the Zone concerned and some Sub-Zonal Representatives. Our Sub-Zonal Representatives (SZR’s) are from amongst our dedicated members who have come forward to actively involve themselves in the Association’s activities, particularly in their own Zone. They are an all-important link between the Management and the members at large for all purposes and members can discuss their views and suggestions with any of them to be conveyed to the Management. Managing Committee has a high appreciation and is full of gratitude to its SZR’s for their dedication and the valuable service being rendered by them voluntarily, despite their own work and other pressures. We appeal to members to please extend all support and cooperation to our SZR’s when contacted.

A list of our present SZR’s in each Zone is enclosed at Annexure-B for member’s information.

At present the number of the SZR’s in some Zones is not as much as we would have wished. We, therefore appeal to our members and their families, specially from our Zones 1(South), 4 (West) and 5 (North-East) to please come forward for this voluntary assignment of community service and convey their willingness by a letter to our office or phone call to our Directory cell (Krishna Murari, 2746 8573, Shamsher Barellia, 2446 7212) or to any one of our Committee members, or a SZR.

b) Our Functions:

We now hold one Central Function in January each year to cover the entire Biradri at Mumbai. In addition, each Zone plans to organize at least one Zonal function with an idea to bring the Zone’s members together in a smaller gathering, thus to be able to meet and know each other better. The Zonal function is a rather recent concept and is gradually picking up in all Zones. Many members are of opinion that as traditionally Mathur get-togethers are popularly linked to Holi or Dewali, the Zones may feel free to plan their functions nearabout Holi/Dewali, if it suits its members. However, it may not be too close to the Central function date.

c) Our Newsletters:

Communication and conveyance of information and views between the Management and the members are vital elements for a healthy growth of the Association and public relationship. For this, the Managing Committee issues two Newsletters (in June and December of each year) containing information of our Functions, Zonal activities, happenings in the Biradri (weddings, deaths, distinctions achieved, etc.) or any other similar event which may come to our notice. Though we keep collecting such information on our own, we may sometime miss something worth reporting which may not have come to our notice in time. Members are, therefore requested to please convey promptly all such items of information to us directly or through any SZR for inclusion in the next Newsletter.

d) Our membership:

i) Considering the ever increasing cost of servicing a Life Member and greatly reduced returns on our investments, Life Membership (Lump-sum payment of Rs. 1000) is now considered for a period of 15 years from enrolment. Thereafter it has to be renewed.

(ii)Annual membership has also to be increased from the present Rs. 75 to Rs. 100 per year (April to March)

Note: Both (i) and (ii) above will come into effect from 1st August, 2005.

We request our members who have not yet taken Life Membership so far to please do so at the earliest. This will obviate the necessity for them having to remember payment of annual membership year after year, besides the much needed augmentation of our Corpus.

4. ZONAL ACTIVITIES

a) Our East Zone (Chembur, New Mumbai) had its annual Holi get-together function at Vashi on Sunday, 23rd April, 2005 evening, attended by about 170 guests. Variety entertainment items by the ladies and children of the Zone , ably produced and directed by Mrs. Reena Dayal and Mrs. Mita Mathur, both from NRI Complex, Nerul were a treat to the audience. Drinks, veg/nveg snacks and food (cooked at site under SZR’s supervision and served hot) were liked by all. Thanks from the Zonal Committee are due to Shri Satish Chandra (Vashi) for assistance in getting the venue and to Shri Rajiv Mathur (Koperkhairane) for providing free bulk-bottled Zero-B water for the function.

It may be recalled that this was the Zone’s fifth annual get-together in the last about as many years. Managing Committee congratulates the Zone’s members and its enthusiastic SZR’s for their liveliness and display of brotherhood. Please keep it up.

In this Zonal function the following took Life Membership of the Association:

i) Shri Diwakar Mathur / Mrs. Vibha, (E-9/Koperkhairane)
ii) Shri Peeyush Mathur / Mrs. Shefali, (E-77/Panvel)
iii) Shri Bharat N. Mathur / Mrs. Rekha, (E-104/Vashi)

Besides, the Zone’s SZR;s collected for MAB Annual membership for the current year from 21 members during the function. An innovative and welcome trend to collect Annual Membership (which otherwise invariably remains unpaid) during the Zonal functions.

b) Our newly formed 7th Zone (North Zone - Dahisar toVirar) is reported to be planning their annual get-together around June end, presumably when its holidaying members are due back. Best wishes for a nice function.

5. MAB DIRECTORY – 2005

a) Managing Committee is happy to announce that compilation of its Member’s Directory-2005 Edition, updated upto April-2005 has been completed and its print is expected to be available to members in July-August this year. Our sincere thanks to our SZR’s for their hard work in collecting field information about corrections etc., as much as could be made available.

b) The new Directory contains a new, 7th Zone, the “NORTH ZONE”, carved out of the present 6th , North-West Zone. This North Zone contains areas from Dahisar to Virar and its formation was felt necessary, considering its distance and increased number of members in the area.

c) Another salient feature of the new Directory is a new system for member’s Ref. No. Earlier, each local member was assigned a Directory Ref.No. (like S-5, E-9, NW-16, etc.) depending upon his/her Zone of residence. This used to present difficulty when a member shifted to some other Zone, necessitating a corresponding change in his Ref. No., every time such a shift took place. This often created further complications in our accounting system while crediting a member’s fees, contributions, etc. properly against his name.

We have now, therefore, introduced a new system of “Personal Identity No.” (PIN), as per the first letter of the member’s name appearing in the “Alphabetical Index” in the Directory. This will be the member’s permanent Ref,No., irrespective of where he stays or shifts to within Mumbai. For example, an Ajay Mathur may get A-6, a Manoj Mathur may get M-12 and so on, as his PIN. It will be easy for him to remember his PIN, besides a great help to us in maintaining our record and accounts. These new PIN’s will come into effect as soon as our new Directory is out.

The Zonal Ref.Nos., will continue to be shown against each member in the Zonal Sections of the Directory just to indicate his area of residence and to facilitate Zonal Activities, but a member will always be identified by his PIN.

d) The letter (L) is prefixed to the name of each Life Member in the Alphabetical List as well as in the Zonal Sections. Our External Life Members are separately listed, with a prefix of “Ext.” to their names.

e) E-mail id’s received from members so far have been put in the Directory. Those who have missed, despite our repeated requests, may still send it by e-mailing a message to us on our email id: bombaymathurs@yahoo.com indicating also their name, address and phone no. for reconfirmation.

Our thanks are due to S/Shri Peeyush Mathur (Panvel) and Pravin Dayal (Nerul) for their laborious help in computerization of the new Directory draft.

6. REMINDERS – Lest you forget,
