New Arrivals & Address changes
The Managing Committee, MAB, takes pleasure in announcing that its next function (Holi get-together) will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2001 from 6.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. at the following venue:
School Compound of the Good Shepherd Church
Sangeetkar N. Dutta Marg,
Off Four Bungalow Road,
Andheri (W), Mumbai - 400 058.
a. The School Compound is right at the back of the Church Compound where we had several functions in the recent past. Entry to the venue is from the N. DuttaMarg, which takes off from the 4 -Bungalow Road just round the Church corner. We are sure the location is familiar to most of our members. However, for newcomers and for those who have not so far been to this venue, brief guidelines to approach are as follows:
i) The 4-Bunglow Road (connecting the JP Road with New Link Road) is a well known road in Andheri (W) and the Church on this road is a prominent landmark, known to everybody around. The place is easily approachable from Andheri (W) Railway Station by taxi / auto.
ii) Bus Nos. 266, 267 from Andheri (W) station, Bus No. 255 from Sion Depot, Bus No. 352 Ltd., from Anushaktinagar (via Chembur, Sion, Bandra, and Andheri).
iii) Any further or more specific guidance about the venue location, approach etc., can be had from any one of our Committee members:
Shri Taj Bahadur, (Tel: 6363340 / 6319319)
Shri Anil Mathur, (Tel: 5700754 / 5797081)
Shri Ajit Mathur, (Tel: 6498673 / 6481744)
iv) A rough sketch showing the approach route to the venue location is provided.
b. Dinner, snacks, drinks (soft as well as "not-so-soft" for our hard taskmasters) will be available as usual.
c. Because of time restrictions on lighting & sound, we are compelled to close down by 10.30 p.m. It is, therefore, earnestly requested that members arrive early so as to enjoy the function to it's maximum.
d. Annual Membership of Rs. 50/- for the new year, 2001 - 2002, may kindly be paidby all members (except Life Members) at the Reception counter.
e. When you approach the Reception Counter (or for any communication any time with the MAB), please do specify your latest MAB Directory Ref. No. (like C-2, W- 12, NE-5, etc.) in addition to your name. This will enable us to locate you quickly in our member's list and correctly credit your payments against your name. Besides, this will save a lot of your and our time at the Reception counter, specially during the peak rush.
a. Our last (Diwali) get together-cum- 'Millennium's Last Function', held on the evening of December 16th 2000 at Hiranandani Complex, Powai was attended by 260 persons. Considering the Millennium spirit, we were expecting a largergathering, but we later learnt that quite a few got dissuaded at the last minute as they thought the venue location to be rather off the way and not so conveniently connected, specially for the late night return after the function. Moreover, due to the postal strike in effect then, we dispatched our Newsletter dated 1.12.2000 through Courier Service to all members, but some remained undelivered due to lack of complete address, or addressee not found, or address changed.
b. The function, held in the vast open ground and the weather being excellent, was agrand success. The enthusiasm with which our organizers worked and with the generous help from sponsors, the event turned out to be a glittering one, highly appreciated and enjoyed by all present. Befitting the Millennium event, Music & Entertainment items were conducted by a professional D J. This pulled not only the youngsters but also the elders to the Dance Floor to dance happily to their heart's content till the end of the permissible time limit.
Food, snacks, drinks and the entertainment program were much appreciated by all, some even fondly remarking that this was a memorable event and perhaps one of the best MAB functions so far. In fact, the pleasant ambiance and openness of the venue, we feel, also contributed a lot in creating liveliness at the function.
Managing Committee thanks all the guests for their praise and appreciation expressed which goes a long way to encourage the organizers and boost their morale. We very much wish we could maintain the trend in our future functions, with the help of generous sponsors.
But for the generous sponsorship response we got, this Millennium-end function would not have been so successful. We gratefully acknowledge receipt of sponsorship / donations for this function from the following members:
i) Shri Suresh C Mathur, (Sumeet / Khar, W-56) - Rs. 11,000 /- venue hire and other expenses.
ii) Shri Sushil K. Mathur, (Powai, NE-44) - Rs. 5,000/- towards venue hire
iii) Shri K B Mathur, (Reliance Petro / Andheri (W) /NW-36) - Rs. 5,000/- towards lighting & music.

Asha & Dr. Girish P Mathur (Juhu, W-18) - Rs. 2,000/- towards function expenses in celebration of their becoming grand parents to twin boys Ashwin & Varun (sons to Amit & Anuuradha) born in the USA last year. Our congrats to the parents & grand parents and wishing the kids a very long and happy life.
v) Shri N S. Mathur, (National Textile Corporation, / C-16) - Rs. 501/- towards function expenses
vi) Shri Taj Bahadur, (Andheri (W), NW-119) - Provided 9 bottles (actual requirement) of R.C. Whiskey. (shop value about Rs. 4000/-)
vii) Smt. Renu & Shri Sushil K. Mathur, (formerly Bhandup, now shifted to Powai) provided free Ice Cream to all the guests as usual. On behalf the guests as well as on our behalf we sincerely thank them for this continued sponsorship. As we mentioned in our last Newsletter, the Sushils have been personally extending this great hospitality to the community with all the pleasure and humility at their command in all our functions for more than a decade without a single break. This definitely sets a record of sorts for the MAB, if not for the Guinness Book. Three Cheers for the Sushils.
viii) Shri Anil K. Mathur, (Powai, NE-6), provided, like before, nicely designed and printed coupons (production cost Rs. 3,500/-) for use in the MAB functions. These will meet our requirement for quite a few years to come. Our sincere thanks to Shri Anil for this thoughtful contribution.

(a) Fixed days for our two annual functions: (Repeat from our last two Newsletters) There have been frequent complaints that sometimes members do not receive our Circular, or receive it late, by which time they have fixed other programs and therefore are unable to join our function.
It has, therefore, been decided to 'standardize' the function days as evenings of the third Saturday of April and the third Saturday of December each year for our Holi and Diwali get togethers respectively. This will be strictly adhered to unless there are some very special reasons for a change. The circulars, intimating the venue and other details will continue to be issued as usual but this 'standardization' of days, we are sure, will be helpful for your advance planning.
(b) Smt. Rita Mathur, (Santa Cruz-W / W-68) informs us that she has joined 'SHADIONLINE.COM', a company offering specialized services for live wedding webcasting and complete wedding management especially customized for the Mathur community. She adds that interested members can avail of her services at Tel. Nos.: 600 7900 / 1/ 2 / 3, and e-mail at: rita@shadionline.com
(c) Our humble but special requests:
i. Members (other than Life Members) may kindly ensure that their annual membership of Rs. 50/- is paid during our April function each year, (personally, if you are there, or sent through anybody else attending the function) or sent by MO / Cheque / DD to the MAB Office.
ii. In our functions, eat and enjoy heartily your dinner but please avoid wastage of food. We feel sorry if plates full of leftovers go to the bin. With increased number of food service counters, please feel free to have second or subsequent helpings.
(d) Statistically speaking:
As on 31st March, 2001 we have a total of 487 members out of which 235 (48%) are Life Members, including 29 External Life Members.

The award was given away at the hands of Shri Gopal B Lal, (Shri M B Lal's brother) at our last function on 16-12-2000 at Powai.

a. In our present Directory, the profession against many members is entered simply as "Consultant", or 'Business', 'Retd.', etc., without any details. It is now proposed to add a couple of words more, giving an indication to the nature of their profession, like 'Consultant - Chemical Engg', 'Business - Textile Export', 'Retd. -XYZ Co.', or 'Retd. Govt. of India', etc., etc. We will soon be collecting this information on phone from the concerned members for incorporation in our Directory.
This will not only help the member concerned by way of his professional introduction and identity but also to other members who may be looking for a person of a particular specialization and instead of going to somebody else, may like to go to their Mathur Bhai.
b. Mumbai has Mathurs from all parts India, mostly from Delhi, U.P, Rajasthan, M P and Bihar, and by and large, they know their respective relatives / mulkwalas, if any in Mumbai. The joy of coming across a hitherto unknown relative / mulkwala in the hub of Mumbai life is only to be experienced to be described. There are many who, even after being here for years, discovered much later their kinship with each other, simply because there was no means of introduction. Long back we had started a system of self-introduction by a newcomer Mathur by inviting him to the mike in our functions. Once we experimented with pinning a named label to the member's shirt. Somehow, these could not work for long, leaving people alone to discover each other.
In this context an idea being developed is to compile a list containing the member's and spouse's ancestral places of origin, father's name and any other distinguishing family identity. This information could be incorporated in the MAB Directory itself or alternatively, we could have a separate booklet named say, 'PARIVAR PARICHEY' (or any other befitting name), as an ancillary to the main Directory and issue it for restricted, private circulation to MAB members only. Furnishing of this information will be optional and purely voluntary by a member, (no compulsion) if he feels this proposal to be interesting and useful. We would like to have member's views on this proposal and to collect the relevant information from those interested.
c. Our Newsletters are too long! Repetitive! Who has the time and patience to read every word?
Such and similar are some of the stray comments we sometimes hear from some members. We respect these views but don't know whether to take them as complaint or compliment. Once upon a time we used to issue simple, few line, notice announcement about the date and venue of the function. Then, gradually we started including information about other important MAB activities and have now raised our circular to the status of a Newsletter, something like an in-house magazine.
We feel that our Newsletters are by far the only means of mass communication and interaction between Mumbai Mathurs and therefore our effort always is to include as much material of common and community interest in it as possible. Moreover, we often have to repeatedly (perhaps ad-nauseum to some) insert quite a few items as reminders (since memory generally tends to be short) or to draw the attention of those who may have missed our earlier Newsletter. Of course, all this certainly increases the length of the Newsletter, not to mention about the increased cost of printing, xeroxing and postage.
Our eyes and ears remain open to the Biradri happenings worth reporting to all not only for information but also to share the joys and sorrows of each other. We depend on our members in general and our Zonal Representatives in particular to gather and pass on any worthwhile piece of information that may be of use or interest to members by appearing in our Newsletter. Now how much of it is read by an individual, is up to him. On our part, we believe, that even if a small percentage of members go fully through our Newsletters and enjoy doing so, our purpose is served and we are happy. After all, there are only two Newsletters in a whole year.
So dear member, right or wrong, our motto is "Suniye ke na suniye, hum haal-e-dil sunaienge".
However, your suggestions for improvements in the Newsletters so as to make them more likable are always welcome.
OOPS! Sorry, see this explanation has further lengthened this Newsletter.
